Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign unraveling, or had there never been a thread maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, but then he admitted that the board had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for accounting issues. Rumours that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic on the pitch as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if progress is being made or self-destructing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return

One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio this season. He completed last season at Parma as a loanee and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad without replacements.

He joined in the first place under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the nature of the player's talent. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
