Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
